Three students from Hwa Chong Institution and one from the National University of Singapore once again sought to inspire the children beneficiaries of The Straits Times School Pocket Money Fund (SPMF) through the sale of Post-it pads. For three consecutive years since 2004, Inspire has been using the same concept of selling Post-it pads though the team members changed each year. The team leader of Inspire’06, Mr Edwin Tan is a former member of last year’s Inspire team. This good example of a sustainable business was extended to include the sale of palm-sized teddy bears this year.
From 27th May to 2nd September, a total of 129 sessions of street sales lasting four hours each were organised which involved more than 2,500 volunteers. Through these street sales, a total of 6,000 bears and 10,000 Post-it pads were sold, reaching out to at least 770,000 members of the public.
In their effort to increase SPMF’s public profile, they also organised an art competition which attracted over 20,000 entries from primary school children all over Singapore. A letter-writing competition was also organised for primary and secondary school students which received over 8,000 entries. A prize presentation and volunteer appreciation ceremony was held with Dr Vivian Balakrishnan, Minister for Ministry of Community Development, Youth & Sports, gracing the event as the Guest-of-Honour.
Inspire’06 raised a total of $100,000 for SPMF from the various activities conducted.
