The consecutive winner of the Most Supportive School Award from last year, Chua Chu Kang Secondary School started this year’s programme by extensively promoting it to their students through the school notice boards and pamphlets. The publicity resulted in seven proposals submission and out of which, five were selected for implementation. This year, the teacher-in-charge of supervising all the participating teams led by example by joining YFC together with three other teachers from other schools. Twelve secondary four past participants from YFC 2005 were invited to mentor and share their experiences with the current participants through special briefing sessions.
The school Principal, Ms Rosalind Sim showed her support by meeting up with individual YFC teams on various occasions to ask about their progress, she had also graced events held by YFC participants like Charity Walk-A-Jog and the Kite flying workshops. Many teachers also gave their support by purchasing at least one of the products made by the students, some even brought their families along to the teams’ events. Teachers of the participants also paid special attention to their studies and often assisted by providing encouragement or even counselling to those who need help.
The school incorporated Service Learning in the YFC programme. Participants were guided through a set of values and leadership qualities that they hoped to achieve by the end of the projects. They also did constant reflection and some even designed a special blogspot address to blog on their experiences.
The school also supported with resources such as providing storage spaces, printing services and equipment, participants were encouraged to use the schools’ facilities for their projects. |
