Pioneer Junior College

Pioneer Junior College (PJC) believed the good cause behind Citibank-YMCA Youth For Causes (YFC) and promoted to the JC1 cohort intensively by displaying posters around the school, making announcements frequently on YFC to raise awareness among the student population.

PJC had the Dean of Character and Leadership Education (CLE), Subject Head of Student Development Programme (SDP) and 3 other appointed teachers to be in charge of promoting, supporting and running the YFC projects in school, showing its enthusiasm in the YFC project. During the management committee’s contact time, they were also briefed by the Subject Head of SDP on the programme. The school had also invited YFC to give assembly talks to their JC1s and screened videos of past YFC teams’ projects for a week to encourage their students to play a part in serving the community. Furthermore, posters on previous YFC winning teams were also displayed at the Concourse in March to further inspire their students.

A total of 26 teams signed up and 6 were selected. PJC also demonstrated strong support for the 6 selected teams by availing their school facilities to the participating teams, such as its computer labs, classrooms and opened up its general office for the storage of products and group discussions. AV equipment was also loaned to teams for filming of their project. Regular opportunities were given to teams for the sales and promotions of their products. A structured mentoring programme was also set in place, where teacher and student mentors of the teams can provide assistance to the teams and communication channel was open between the teams and the school’s management.

In support of an appeal by one of their teams, Hearts, PJC assisted in inviting the elderly from Bukit Batok Home for Aged and teenagers from Melrose Home and orphans to attend their concert. The teachers also supported their students by buying some tickets and also sponsoring the tickets for the beneficiaries.. Further support from the school was demonstrated when Dean CLE and SH SDP attended the concert and assisted in hosting the old folks and teenagers from the Homes. The school had incorporated the YFC project as CIP hours as reward to the students.
