Play it by Ear (PibE) has two main goals, (1) to form a percussion band made up of deaf youths who ultimately is competent of performing in paid-for events and (2) to raise funds for their beneficiary, Singapore Association for the Deaf. Their first goal originates from a desire to provide a long-term platform for deaf youths to express themselves through music.
Seemingly tough task to get hearing-impaired youths to play musical instruments, the team encountered several obstacles throughout the project, e.g. drop out of youths due to lack of interest after the first lesson, high rental of equipments and spaces, difficulties to find a performance venue. The team, however, managed to deliver the project with persistence and flexibility to modify their project along the way, they decided to downsize the idea of raising fund from public, instead they did it through adoption of a Lego Brick to build a model designed by a deaf designer.
The creative concept of establishing a band with deaf youths generates a fair amount of publicity in the media, Lianhe Zaobao and Straits Times Life! both featured their project. It also gained support from different corporations which could be evidenced from the amount of sponsorship, 12 in total for both monetary and non-monetary that they had secured. This project does not cease after the completion of YFC, currently the band is undergoing negotiation with several venue providers for them to work as their in-house performers.
The team raised $10,457.32, with 221 volunteers recruited, reached out to 15, 323 members of the public. |
