46. The Straits Times School Pocket Money Fund
On Children’s Day (Oct 1) 2000, The Straits Times launched the Straits Times School Pocket Money Fund to provide financially-needy children with pocket money for school. The children can use this sum for food, transport or school miscellaneous purposes. This not only removes financial obstacles that may hinder students from exploring their full potential in school, but also relieves the burden many parents face as they struggle to feed their families on meager incomes. This year, the funds raised by Citi-YMCA Youth For Causes teams will provide financial aid to these poor children. They hope that this project will encourage the public to contribute and sustain the Pocket Money Fund outreach. This is crucial because the number of children asking for help has increased substantially, especially in the light of economic turmoil in recent years.
